Macbeth
(William Shakespeare)

Publicidade
Like most of Shakeaspeare´s plays, Macbeth has become a symbol of many human emotions and atittudes; ambition, betrayal, and the never ending struggle between good and evil. Macbeht is a respected scotish nobleman who murders his own cousin, Duncan, to take over the throne.

The night he murders his cousin, Macbeth has chosen a destiny; he killed the king during his sleep, when he was a guest at his own castle, and thus he has chosen the destiny the witches had predicted for him. The three sisters anounced he shall be king of Scotland, but his children would not, as they also say, Banquo´s children shall inherit the throne. Macbeth gave up his honour, as he used to be a warrior, a man who killed to defend his country and king, and became a simple murderer who would take someone´s life moved simply by greed.

The new king will do just anything to stay in power, but his enemies are evergrowing, until MacDuff finally kills him in his castle. When this happened, Lady Macbeth, who had initially been the voice of evil, has commited suicide, leading to one of the greatest soliloquis ever written; "She should have died hereafter, there woul have been a time for such a word... Life is but a poor player, that struts and frets his way upon the stage, and then is heard no more...it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." These is the reaction of Macbeth when he finds out abput his wife`s death, a deep reflection questioning the real meaning of individual existence.

This tragedy shares a lot of elements from greek tragedies, as in greek fictions, the real tragedy is not being in control of one´s destiny, and the breaking of natural order by commiting a sin called hubrus (which is being excesive and unmeasured). After the natural order has been altered, the only way to get back to normal is through the cleansing effect of blood. In Macbeth, it is posible to believe that he wasn´t fully in control of his destiny, even if he chose to murder his cousin, after that, everything was out of his hands, and only with Macbeth and his wife´s death, it was posible for peace and order to return to the scotish throne. It is posible to argue that this character was pulled by two forces, and finally dominated by his own greed, being then, a puppet to destiny.
