Macbeth

Setting: The play was written aproximately in 1606. It is one of the best tragedies by Shakespeare. The action takes place between 1040 and 1057 in Scotland and England. It dramatizes an episode of Scotland's history.
Context: In the Inverness castle, his residence, Macbeth and his wife come up with the idea of killing the King of Scotland, Duncan. If Macbeth will be the one to brandish the knife, the decision will be made by Lady Macbeth. She, the embodiment of ambition, is the center of the tragedy.
Argument: Duncan, King of Scotland, together with other noble men, fight against the Lord of Cawdor, ally of the Norwegian. Macbeth stands out in the battle. When he returns to the castle, Macbeth and Banquo, another General of the King, find three witches who prophesy that Macbeth will be Lord of Cawdor and King of Scotland, but after it Banquo's lineage will rule. Macbeth comment these prophesies with his wife and the idea of the murder is born in them for ambition. King Duncan thought to stay that night in Macbeth's castle, which facilitates their plan. The King arrives to the castle and announce that he grants Macbeth the title of Lord of Cawdor, executed for treason, one of the prophesies coming true. this strenghtens their purpose and they prepare the murder of the king during his nocturnal stay. They get the guards who were in front of their door drunk, and Macbeth, impulsed by Lady Macbeth, commit the crime, stabbing the King while he was sleeping. Later Macduff and other noble men from Scotland arrive to the castle. Macduff goes into the King's chamber and discovers the murder. The King's sons, Malcolm and Donalbain, flee afraid of being also murdered. That is how they become suspicious of the murder, which Macbeth makes good use of. But the prophesy said that Banquo's lineage would rule, so Macbeth plans to kill him and his son, Fleance, to avoid the prophesy come true. However, though Banquo is murdered, his son manages to flee. Involved even more in the crime, Macbeth is visited by Banquo's spectrum and Lady Macbeth has visions of her hands blood-stained that lead her to madness. Macbeth is unable to stop his ambition and the fear of losing his reign. Afraid of his power, he goes back to the witches and demands them another prophesy. They answer him that he should not be afraid until a forest advance towards his castle, Dunsinane's forest. Due to his insane ambition, almost madness, he orders to kill Macduff's wife and son. Macduff, Scottish nobleman, is refugiated in England and organizes an army to fight against Macbeth. Finally, he and other noblemen, along with Malcolm, Duncan's son, form an army in England and go against Macbeth. to take the castle, they create an strategy: disguise themselves with branches and bushes and go ahead secretly. At the same time Macbeth receives two terrible news: his wife is dead and Dunsinane's forest is advancing towards his castle. Macbeth foresees that the prophesy of the witches is coming true. He faces the battle and dies fighting with Macduff, who carrying Macbeth's head, proclamates Malcolm as the new King of Scotland.
