The Master And Margarita
(Bulgakov, Mikhail Afanasevich)

Publicidade
It is a pleasant summer day in teh 1920s, while the unsuspecting people of Moscow go about their busines unawares of the havoc that is in store for them due to some foreign visitor. The devil, disguised as Professor Woland, comes to town equipped with his entourage, Mephistopheles and Behemot, an enormous talking cat that smokes cigars. As they test the worth of the Moscovites life becomes much more interesting, if harrowing, for the Soviet citizens.

The novel opens with a philosophical discussion held by two upstanding Soviet citizens and head literary figures in Moscow society. The two writers argue over the concept of Jesus Christ, did he exist? As they argue, the poet Berlioz becomes more and more uneasy, perhaps because of the oppressive heat, or maybe it's just nerves.

Suddenly a stranger is in their midst. He is amused by their conversation about Jesus and wonders if they don't believe in the devil either. The two figures adamantly deny the existence of the devil while secretly wondering if this stranger is actually a member of the KGB. The foreigner goes on to predict Berlioz, the editor's death, which would occur in a matter of moments, under hte wheels of the public tram.

After this event occurs, the Devil, incognito as a master of magic, begins to seriously upset Moscow society. As people vanish and women are running around Moscow in the nude, the devil gets his revenge on all the Soviet citizens who are overcome by greed and corruption to carve a place for themselves in Moscow society.

Throughout this chaos, the lives of two lovers are brought together again. A writer known as The Master languishes in a mental institution after his novel about Pontius Pilate fails, and his lover, Margarita, remains despondant in her rich house with the husband who she never loved. The Devil reunites the lovers and find ways to punish the wicked in this delightful satire on early Soviet society.
