Daniel
(The Bible)
Daniel was just a teenage boy when he was taken from his home and forced to serve in the court of the most powerful man on earth. He was an Israelite captive who lived in the midst of a people that were busy destroying the life of his nation. Challenges, deceptions, and dangers were around every corner, forcing Daniel to balance the preservation of his own life against the loyalty and service he wished to give to God. But Daniel was not defenseless. He had courage and wisdom, he had the ability to interpret visions and dreams, he had the sovereign God as his ally. Babylon, however, did not acknowledge God or serve him. They had their own religions, their own gods, and there was no reason for them to tolerate the opinions of a nation they had just overrun. No man could stand alone, could stand in such sharp contrast to these captors and expect to live. Daniel, however, strove to do that very thing. It is this contrast that set the stage for the dramatic confrontations that occur in the book. In the middle of these confrontations, God is revealed as the main character. Rulers change, empires fall, and the gods of Daniel's captors come and go. Yet amidst all these changes, the relationship of God and Daniel is constant and prominent.
