Prospero, Duke of Milan more interested in his books and magic than in the government is ousted from his throne by his brother Antonio. After the coup Prospero is put to sea in a rotten ship with his baby daughter Miranda. They reach an island inhabited by a half-human creature Caliban, son of the witch Sycorax who has imprisoned the spirit Ariel. Prospero makes these two his servants. Twelve years later when the play begins Prospero by his magic contrives the shipwreck of Alonso, King of Naples and his followers including his brother Sebastian, his son Ferdinand the honest councilor Gonzalo and Prospero?s own brother Antonio. Ferdinand who is separated from the others and thinks himself the only survivor of the wreck meets Miranda. At once they fall in love according to Prospero?s design though he pretends to think him a spy and his magic forces him to do the work of a slave. Meanwhile Sebastian and Antonio attempt to murder Alonso and Gonzalo. Caliban has menwhile met Stephano, Alonso?s drunken butler and Trinculo his jester. He persuade them to set out to murder Prospero. Prospero releases Ferdinand from his spell and gives Miranda to him. He makes Ariel present a masque before the betrothed couple. But he interrupts it to drive off Caliban, Stephano and Trinculo and to bring the spell-bound king and his courtiers to his cell. Prospero forgives his brother Antonio but makes him promise to restore his dukedom. On his part he restores Ferdinand to Alonso who had given him up for dead. Prospero renounces his magic frees Ariel and all prepare to set sail for Italy leaving Caliban once more the sole occupant of the island.
