A Prayer For Owen Meany
(Irving, John.)

Publicidade
I was recommended the book A Prayer for Owen Meany by an old friend and to tell the truth i was rather dubious about reading it. Just the title made me think "religion is really not for me". However i started to read it one day during my lunch break and that was that - i couldn't put the thing down until i had finished it!

The story is about a young boy called Owen Meany who has a physical disability that makes him very small and weak, and the special unbreakable relationship that he forms with his best friend John. Their lifestyles are very different but the two boys bond in such a way that they come to depend on each other in their own way. Each finds in the other what they lack in themselves and it really does make a heartwarming story.

The story follows Owen and John through childhood and the rigours of school life into adulthood where John joins the US army and is stationed abroad during the Vietnam war. However because of Owens disability he can't take his place next to his best friend and has to remain at home serving as an army administrator. The story ends with a beautiful twist that actually made the tears stream down my face and there aren't many books that have managed to do that.

I thouroughly recommend A Prayer for Owen Meany as a book with everything; a brilliant and intriguing storyline, fantastically creative characters, twists that really shake you up and the ultimate ending. As soon as i had finished the book and given it back i went out and bought myself a copy as it is a magical book that you can certainly read more than once. definately one for the collection.
