Sophie's World
(Jostein Gaarder)

Publicidade
Sophie is a 14-year-old schoolgirl who finds a mysterious package waiting for her at home. She opens it and reads it: it is a free course in Philosophy from a mystery teacher, Alberto Knox! It starts with the questions "Who are you?" and "Where does the world come from?" Everyday there is a new chapter and Sophie gets more and more excited about it, eagerly awaiting the next installment. Together with Sophie we learn interesting facts about the lives and thoughts of the philosophers from Socrates and Aristotle to Freud. Like Sophie, we are challenged to think out of the box and question the world around us. In a surprise twist at the end, Sophie learns that, as Berkeley argued that we exist only in the mind of God, she exists only in the mind of Albert Knag, who writes a book about Sophie for his daughter. It is an entertaining and educational, although subjective, beginner's guide to philosophy.
