Hanna' S Daughters
(Marianne Fredriksson)
This is a gripping story of three generations of Swedish women the matriarch being Hanna, the great grandmother down to Johanna, her daughter and Anna her granddaughter. Hanna was the daughter of Swedish farmers during the famine years and was sent to work as a maid at a relative?s home. She was raped by the master?s son and he fled but she bore the baby and gave birth at thirteen. She was allowed to continue on with her job and raised the baby until he was a toddler. One day a man called Broman came to look at the old mill and saw Hanna there and was told about her situation by Anna the village midwife who tended to Hanna after the rape. He hired the mill and as he needed a wife to help him he married Hanna and adopted Ragnar. Ragnar and him got along well. She bore Broman two sons but he was not fond of them especially the one who looks like the father he hated. Because of the difficulty of her pregnancies Broman refrain from sleeping with her for a while. When they got down to sleeping together again she had a difficult childbirth but the baby turned out to be healthy. Broman named her Johanna after the daughter he lost on a previous marriage. She spoiled her and ignored the boys more. Running the mill would soon turn out to be difficult for Broman as he was getting more frail. He died soon after and as he predicted his mother died after. He said before that his mother would not die before him so he could not have his inheritance. After the funeral Hanna moved to town where Ragnar and his girlfriend lived and they stayed at a one room flat. Her sons were loafing around drunk and Ragnar reined them over until they found work. Hanna found work at a big bakery and she was so tired after work that the young Johanna had to do most of the house chores. When she grew up she met Arne and she got pregnant before they got married. They married soon after and she did not like Arne?s mother at all but got along well with the father-in law. Arne and Johanna had a daughter named Anna but she miscarried twice and lost two babies. As Hanna got more frail and retired Ragnar moved her into a retirement flat with modern conveniences. She died after some time and Ragnar soon died too after a shooting accident. Anna love her Uncle Ragnar. She grew up to be smart and educated and able to support herself. She met Rickard, a womaniser. She had two daughters, Maria and Malin but lost a baby boy which made her depressed. She and Rickard divorced then later remarried. When Arne and Johanna got older she has moved into a home and Arne was not used to being on his own. He had an illness and died in hospital. When Johanna died, Anna stayed at her parents home. She was writing about her matriarchal history and she rummaged into her parent?s attic for clues and old photos. She found out how Hanna, her grandmother survived the rough years being raped and giving birth to Ragnar at thirteen who turned out to be like a father to his brood and took care of them. A couple offered to buy the house and Rickard arranged for the sale. It was here in her grief after her mother?s death that she discovered Rickard and her could still be together after all and make their marriage work.
