I read with interest the book written by John SImpson a War Correspondent with the BBC:
Its particular interests focus on Politics, and History with a touch of Literature thrown in for good measure: He describes his life in early childhood in London where he was raised and educated:

His family life is strongly linked with the social culture of this period of 1944 to the present day: His retelling of stories about his parents, aunts and uncles are part of his ongoing need to find an identity in what he describes as /gray London/

There are many parts of life well documented: such as the wearing of school uniforms: most of us wore schools uniforms and so evidently did John Simpson: he looks very smart indeed: this particular view was to haunt him throughout his life:

I note that he seems to regard all of us who are of similar background and age as

in /the evening of life/

I would point out that when I, as a young woman, and lived in /gray London/ I would receive a
stout reply:

as follows:

There was no self pity allowed nor self indulgence unlike indeed John Simpson: but he redeems his writings with wonderful photography : I particularly liked the photograph of

I know how important that was and still is for most people:

His several marriages apparently were disapproved of by his family: but they seem to have forgotten the same of all that and rather like John SImpson so to speak /got over it/

His children feature and his grandchildren: the BBC have seen much action and the writer here describes in full his experiences working for the BBC as a Correspondent: he now World Affairs Editor! His clarity of expression is helpful in the context of world conflict and I find it agreeable to read it from the pages of this book as well as see it on television.

I recall myself that I had the same taxi driver as John Simpson: I was on my way back from Istanbul and the taximan said /I also drive the BBCs JOHN SIMPSON to the BBC/ I felt honoured to be driven by such a taximan.

Its an open book in as much as it doesnt drive too hard a bargain with reading it: by this I mean, you can manage to get through it in a working week!

All sorts of questions arise out of John Simpson's writings: he is from a long line of Simpsons; he is very proud of his roots and he is quintessentially British! I love this aspect of British humour! There is a lovely /black and white/ feeling in this recounting of the period from 1944 through the 1950s and up to day the 2000s:

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the rhyme about the bathroom:

It offers echoes of my own experience as well.

I was just as pleased to read this book as many times when passing through London Heathrow Airport I was to see the book for sale and finally I managed to both buy and read it fairly recently. An excellent piece of literary writing which I thoroughly recommend:
