Jewish Heritage Route
(nn)
At the turn of the 15th century, Kazimierz - an independent town at that time - became the centre of two cultures: Christian and Jewish. Many heritage buildings (especially sacral architecture) that bear testimony to the magnificence of the two cultures can be admired to this day. The Jewish Heritage Route begins with the very active Centre for Jewish Culture (in ul. Meiselsa). From here, we proceed to the Synagogues. The Tempel Synagogue (ul. Miodowa) was built early in the latter half of the 19th century for the Society of Progressive Jews. Having passed by the 17th-century Kupa Synagogue (in ul. Warszauera), we reach Isaac Synagogue (in ul. Jakuba) built in the years 1638-1644. Towering over ul. Józefa is the Wysoka (High) Synagogue, built towards in the latter half of the 16th century. The culmination of the route is ul. Szeroka - a street with three Jewish temples. The most precious of these is the Old Synagogue (Alte Schul), being Poland''s most ancient Jewish structure, as its origins date back to the 15th-century. Currently the synagogue houses a branch of the Historical Museum of the City of Krakow and presents an exhibition devoted to the history and culture of Krakow Jews. Adjacent to the Renaissance Remuh Synagogue (mid-16th century) is a cemetery dating back to even earlier times. Among the tombs, there is that of Rabbi Moses Isserles (died 1572), to which Jews make pilgrimage from the furthest parts of the world. Having visited the 17th-century Popper Synagogue, we go outside the historic core of Kazimierz, to see the New Jewish Cemetery at ul. Miodowa 55.
