Rebecca
(Daphne du Maurier)
A young and naive girl gets married to the wealthy Maxim de Winter , who takes her to live to his seashore Englishmanor,Manderley. Once there, things begin to get not easy. She finds out that her husband's first wife, Rebecca, died a year befor during a sea storm. Her corpse has not been found.A mentally retarded man, who lives in a cabin by the beach, utters incoherent phrases, which lead into thinkinking he has been threatened into hiding something. On the other hand ,the housekeeper still in mourning, Mrs Danvers, manifests blind and morbid admiration for Rebecca, which leads her even to keep her room the same way it was when she was alive. It is as if the late Mrs de Winter would burst into the room any minute. The atmosphere in Manderley is fully embedded by Rebecca's presence. So much so that theprotagonist wonders if she will manage to live up to the former Mrs deWinter. Although the wedded couple tries hard in their attempt to keep the ghosts of the past at bay, these will be unleashed when a ship discovers by chance Rebeca's dead body.Since then, important confessions will take place, which will lead the action up to an intriguing end. Alfrd Hitchcock turned thi novel into a movie, respecting the oppressive and gloomy atmospherewhich pervades the text. Secrets ,mysteries, doubts, which the protagonist tries to overcome in the firm belief that the love she feels for her husband will triumph against all odds.
