The book starts narrating character Vadinho's adventures, he the first husband of Dona Flor, a coy wife even though her drinker bohemian husband. Some while after his death, Dona Flor remarries with another sort of husband, more earnest and well-behaved. The curious thing is that Vadinho literaly apears between the couple but is only seen as a ghost by Dona Flor. And the book develops with her former husband's ghost living every detail of the new couple's every day life, until the threesome live happily ever after and hence the title 'D.
