Judge Dredd ? Return Of The King
(ENNIS, GARTH & EZQUERRA, CARLOS)
ABSTRACT ? ENNIS, GARTH & EZQUERRA, CARLOS ? JUDGE DREDD ? RETURN OF THE KING in DEATH AID 2001 Titan Books, A dark and rather sorrowful follow up to the earlier Judge Dredd epic, Necropolis, which led to the death of millions of people. Dredd has just returned from killing a group of bank robbers who have killed their own hostages. Dredd is startled to find that a long dead chief judge, Silver is sitting on the main throne like chair in the Hall of Justice, declaring that he is now back in charge of operations. There is just one slight problem, - Judge Silver is dead. No one could possibly doubt it. He is clearly dead, he is virtually a rotten zombie who has crawled out of the grave by sheer will power, but he claims that as he never technically resigned from office, he is still in charge. He declares himself Kind of Mega City One, and expects the judges, including Dredd to respect his authority. He laments in sorrow and fear his time in the grave and his betrayal of the judges to the Dark Judges who started the Necropolis War. He comes across as a tired old man who just wants his old job back. Dredd reminds Silver of his offences and declares him unfit to take office again. Dredd then blasts him away alas judgement and sentence combined. Silver is totally vaporised, but Psi-Judges report afterwards sensing the sadness in the air where he haunts their Halls Of Justice still. There are perhaps a few too many flashback panels to the earlier Necropolis story, but this is still quite a neat piece. It?s a shame the Judge wasn?t given some time in office to see just how well or badly he would have handled it, but there would have been no logical way to make anyone think he could do it.
