?How Opal Mehta Got Kissed, Got Wild and Got a Life?, by Kaavya Viswanathan, the much publicized yet controversial author, has managed to entertain through her writing only so with her subtle attempts at humor and the zest of Life she has displayed in it, though not for the originality of storyline or from what has been said and discussed, the originality of thoughts. The book discusses the passion with which Opal, an American Indian and her family attempt to get her into Harvard, considering that it was their life long dream. Opal is projected as a clever and studious girl with a passion for physics, who must ultimately discover herself to relate better to the world and to her dream of Harvard. Somewhere along the line when reading the book, I was reminded of the umpteen teenage hostel related story books such as St.Claire?s that we used to grab hold of when in the 5th or 6th grade. Though written with much more class, the end is too expected, certain situations and outcomes too predictable. One also gets this itching feeling that Kaavya is relating her own story? Is that true? No one can say, but her narrative style speaks in that style and tone, you are almost forced to believe Kaavya had to write this book, so she wrote it. Overall I would recommend this volume to someone looking forward to a light read to Pass away the evening. Some of the incidents do bring on a smile and can be related to. For intense readers, or people looking for depth and literary meaning, they can easily give this a pass and go on to other fantastic writers such as Amitav Ghosh or Vikram Seth.
