The Last Of The Mohicans
(james fenimore cooper)
The last of The Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper As a teenager I read this book in idealogical conjunction with the then BBC Sunday serial and after the recent holywood blockbuster I found myself hunting in the garage for my old copy with the goal of a re-read on my mind. I was not disappointed after a slow start re-grasping just how Cooper strings together the English language I could hardly put it down. In essence it is the story of two innocent sisters Cora and Alice caught up in the bitter conflict of the French and Indian wars and they become the prize in a life - and - death contest between Magua ,their ruthless , cunning captor and the one man with a chance to save them , the woodsman known as Hawkeye. War has no bounds and in this masterpiece the French and The British although credited with breeding and civility do not recieve many plaudits from Cooper. Each camp selfish and treacherous out for their own gains. Not suprisingly the red Indians in the novel are depicted as fearsome and savage even loathesome especially the Hurons , however the Mohicans as in the title of the literature are a cut above the rest. We get to hear something about their history and throught the progression of the book we attach ourselves to Uncas and Chingachgook. We acquire an admiration and a respect for them . There is some sort of association between Uncas and Cora the eldest of the sisters. How does it all end , surely the title of the piece does give us some clue that this classic may not have a happy ending . Cora meets her demise at the hands of Magua although she does retain her dignity to the end. Chingachgook a wonderful warrior throughout wise as an owl after the death of his son Uncas is indeed the last of the Mohicans.
