(Karina Westphal)
Published annualy by the Publishing House Iluminuras (in Brazil), this book, from the great master of the Fantastic Literature and Horror, presents three stories, and the first one is the title of the book and the theme of this review. Nas Montanhas da Loucura (In the Mountains of Madness) tells the terrible story of an expedition organized by a University, which goes to the misterious Antarctica, with the aim of doing geological and topographical research - and all kinds of scientific studies; with a group of experts and students. However, when reaching the freezing continent and beginning the excavations and ice perfurations, they discover something bizarre: a triangular mark, in a rock fragment, ancestral. Intrigued by the mark, some members from the group leave heading to unexplored portions of land in the Antarctican mountains seeking for possible clues and clarifyings. And what they find in their journey make them shudder and question all the evolutive history of the human beings of this planet. Something terrible, a Primordial Evil, not originated in this planet, which seems to have inhabited the freezing continent millions of years ago, and the worst, which can still inhabit. The expedition was about to discover something that should never be dug, due to its malevolent nature, something that could ratify the most insane and bizarre delirous that a human being might have had, and that make these cold mountains, true Mountains of Madness. A story which makes us think about the humankind and its truths, and that can rouse the most primitive nightmares!
