Timbuktu
(PAUL AUSTER)
See the world through the eyes of a dog, Mr. Bones, the inseparable companion of Willy G. Christmas. Born William Gurevich, he changes his surname to Christmas, after having a strange vision of Father Christmas having addressed to him through his tv set. From that day on, Willy becomes more and more loose from the material world, owner of an unmatched altruism. Having had a hard past of drugs and alcohol, Willy lives on the streets since his mother's death, four years ago. Feeling now that his health is no longer reliable to ensure his own, but especially, his dog survival, he decides to search for the only person that had ever believed in his achievement ability: his high school english teacher, Mrs. Swanson. In her hands, he can trust his lifetime's work, stuffed in a locker in the bus terminal of Fayette street - "poems, stories, essays and musings, besides the first 1800 pages of an epic-in-progress, Vagabond Days". For this purpose, Willy relies in his faithfull friend, Mr. Bones, to accompany him from Brooklyn to Baltimore, where Willy hopes to find his redemption, trusting his friend to the cares of someone who will surely love the dog and take good care of it. Will Willy make it? Mr. Bones will face a new situation, and this will provoke a profound change in his life, in his convictions and in his principles. For ridiculous as it may seem, characterizing a dog this way, one begins to realize in this so excelent descriptive narrative enriched by simple everyday details and brilliant word games, that it is very easy to be lead by the memories and life experience engraved in this dog's mind. Mr. Bones is the conscience, the salvation and the damnation of Willy. Willy is god to Mr. Bones. The world of Mr. Bones revolves around his relation with his master, who tells him about Timbuktu. In his adventure, Mr. Bones becomes Cal, and then Sparky. However, Mr. Bones is a faithfull dog, and only beside Willy can he truly be happy.
