The Da Vinci Code
(Dan Brown)
The story starts with the murder of Santiere, curator of the Louvre and a high-ranking member of an ancient secret society known as the Priory of Sion. The murderer is Silas, a religious zealot working for Opus Dei, an organization that promotes strict Catholicism. The organization has fallen foul of the press but has the support of the Vatican . The leader of Opus Dei had been approached by an anonymous benefactor, known as "The Teacher? who had provided key information on Priory Heirarchy. "The Teacher" has ordered the torture and murder of four Priory members who know the location of the Grail. members. "The Teacher" purportedly wants to ensure that Grail remains secret to protect the church. The leader of Opus Dei has been told that the Vatican will be removing it's support within six months. and activates the security system thereby cutting off his attacker's access to himself. Silas manages to shoot him through th bars. Santiere realises he has about twenty minutes before dying and knows that the Grail secret dies with him. He writes clues in a special marker only visible under black light. These are for his estranged granddaughter, Sofie. He leaves further clues in the way he arranges his body. Langdon is summoned by the police and asked for his expertise. The police do not mention that Santiere named Langdon in his message and that,as a result, Langdon is their prime suspect. Sofie, a cryptologist with the French police, arrives to warn Langdon that he is in danger of arrest. Langdon and Sofie interpret the clues are lead to another part of the Louvre. Here they find another message and a Many clues later, they establish that the key opens a safe deposit box which in turn holds a codex fashioned after a design by Da Vinci. If tampered with, the contents are destroyed. A code is needed to gain access. The investigation establishes Santiere as the Grandmaster of the Priory and that the Priory protects the Grail. Langdon and Sofie turn to Teabing for assistance. Teabing is an expert in Grail lore and offers to help. Things come to a head when Silas attacks Teabing?s house while the police are waiting to swoop outside. Silas is captured and Teabing arranges for Sofie, Langdon, himself and his valet to flee France with a trussed up Silas in tow. The search leads to a Templar?s church in England and there it is revealed that TEABING?S valet is in league with Silas. Teabing is held hostage and the codex is handed over to his valet as a result. Teabing is taken away by his captors. When Teabing murders his valet,we learn that Teabing is ?The Teacher?. A trip to Isaac Newton?s grave reunites Teabing and Langdon and it is there that Teabing reveals his true intentions. The Holy Grail is a collection of eye witness accounts of the marriage of Jesus Christ to Mary Magdalene and the birth of their daughter. The Grail also keeps track of Christ?s line. Christ is shown to be a mortal man and not a deity. Mary is portrayed not as a whore but as a disciple and the intended head of the Christian Church. She is shown to have been a very influential woman and of noble descent. This would mean that both she and Chrit were of noble descent and their heirs would have claims to the throne. Teabing believes that the Priory had been corrupted y the church and had not fulfilled their duty to release the Grail information to the world. He now wishes to ensure that this happens and wants Langdon to help him open the codex. He uses violent threats to achieve this aim but is outwitted by Langdon. Langdon and Sofie are led to a very unusual Templar church, which is full of symbols from all religions. Sofie remembers the place and a puzzle her grandfather asked her to complete. The puzzle is a strangely formed arch which, when correctly solved, leads to the former hiding place of the Grail. The Grail had there once but had since been moved. A visit to a nearby house reveals that Sophie?s grandmother and brother had not been killed in a car accident as she had thought and that they were living near the Templar church. Santiere was being pressured by the church to keep the Grail secret and when his daughter and son- in- law where killed in an automobile accident, he decided to send part of his family into hiding. The clues have now run out and Robert and Sophie are left wondering where the Grail is.
