Genesis- First Book Of The Bible
(King James Version)

Publicidade
The Bible is actually divided into two sections, or testaments, the old and new testament. The Old Testament tells the stories of God before the birth of Jesus Christ. The New Testament tells of the life and teaching of Jesus from birth to death to the resurrection.

Genesis is the first book of the Old Testament. It is the first of five books, or the Pentateuch. With Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy are referred to as the books of law because they give the instruction and law given to Moses and the Israelites by the Lord.

The stories that Genesis tells are all about beginnings. From the beginning of the world to the beginning of the Israelite Nation the duration of time span of the stories lasts about 2,200 years.

It is in this book where most of the common biblical stories people are familiar with are located. I will briefly describe some of the better known stories of the book. Genesis starts with the story of creation where God created the world in six days. For six days, each day a new part of the world was created and on the seventh day the Lord rested.

In succession, the next story is that of Adam and Eve where man is created. Out of the first man woman is created as a companion by use of one of Adam's ribs. Also in this story the concept of sin is created and through Eve's actions sin is passed on to all following humans. This custom of baptism is used to cleanse what is known as original sin.

The story of Cain and Abel follow. The pair of brothers was of Adam and Eve. Abel was a Sheppard and Cain was a farmer. Each brother gave offerings to God but Cain felt his were not being received as well as his brother's were and grew jealous. While out into the field for the days work, Cain slew Abel and hid the body. The Lord asked Cain of Abel and he Cain said he did not know where Abel was. That is where the saying "Am I my brother's keeper?" comes from. The Lord told Cain he knew of his wrongdoings and made it so that whatever ground he tilled would not bear fruit. Cain then became a wanderer.

As the book of Genesis progresses the world fell into sin which made the Lord angry. In order to cleanse the world of evil the Lord spoke to Noah and told him to build an ark. Noah being a follower of God listened without question. Once the construction was complete God told Noah to gather his wife and all the creatures of the Earth in pairs, a male and female of each species. The Lord then sent a flood out onto the Earth that killed and cleansed everything except the creatures on the arc. Once the flood waters receded, Noah, his wife and the animals came out of the arc and repopulated the world. The Lord made a covenant with Noah that he would not cause such damage to the world again,

the story continues until the birth of Joseph which is the beginning of the end of Genesis. The play of the amazing technicolor coat comes from the coat Joseph's father Jacob made for him because he was his favorite son. Having eleven other brothers view this favoritism, Joseph was a not well liked. One day a pot by the brothers to kill Joseph turned into them selling him off as a slave to travelers. So it became that Joseph was one of Pharaoh?s servants. Joseph eventually became the ruler of Egypt and came to forgive his brothers for what they had done.

This is only a brief overview of the stories and teachings of Genesis. I highly recommend that you take the time and read the entirety of the story with an open mind to take in all that the stories have to teach.
