(Bill Pronzini)
Bill Pronzini?s Nameless Detective series is one of the most popular in all of detective fiction. Nameless operates out of an office in San Francisco. Over the years he has solved many fascinating cases. In recent years, as he?s grown older, he has settled down. He married Kerry, his longtime girlfriend and together, they adopted a little girl, thanks to his involvement in a case resulting in the death of her natural parents. In Spook, Pronzini has Nameless taking another major step in both his personal and professional life. After having several close calls in recent years, Nameless has decided to take life easier. As he shifts into a state of semi-retirement, he?s granting his partner more control over the development of their detective agency. To assist her in handling the workload, they hire an associate, Jake Runyon.Runyon has recently moved to the San Francisco Bay Area from Seattle. Seeking to cope with the death of a wife he dearly loved and to reconnect with his only child, an adult son from whom he is estranged, all Runyon wants during the workday is to lose himself in his job. The first major case he handles in association with Nameless and Tamara deals with the death of a homeless man, known on the street as Spook. As Runyon does most of the legwork involved in trying to find out who Spook was and why he was killed, Tamara copes with troubles in her relationship with her boyfriend, a professional cellist, and Nameless settles more comfortably into his role as husband and father. However, all three of them find their lives in jeopardy, the closer they get to the truth behind Spook?s death. Working together in a last ditch effort to save their lives as they confront a madman killer, they establish a solid working relationship with each other which is bound to lead to their continuing to work together in future entries in the Nameless series.Pronzini has succeeded in adding a new main character to the Nameless series without adversely affecting its popularity or prospects for longevity.
