Publicidade
Edmond Dantès? success is brought to an abrupt end when he is arrested for treason on the day of his wedding. His envious friend, Fernand Mondego learned that Dantès is carrying a letter from Napoleon to a group of Bonapartist sympathizers in Paris. Although Dantès is uneducated, and does not understand the meaning of the letter, Mondego realized that was his a chance to put his friend in prison and take his fiancée, Mercédès, for himself. With the help of Danglars and Caderousse, he wrote a letter accusing Dantès of treason.

After seeing through the plot to frame Dantès, Villefort almost lets him free, but changes his mind after Dantès tells him that the man whom he is supposed to deliver the letter to is actually Villefort?s father. Knowing that should that ever go public, his political career would be finished, he sends Dantès to the Château d?If, a prison where the most dangerous political prisoners are kept.
During his imprisonment, Dantès meets Abbé Faria, a wise Italian priest jailed for his political views. He teaches Dantès all of his knowledge, and tells him how to find a great treasure hidden on the island of Monte Cristo. After Faria dies, Dantès manages to escape from the terrible prison.

He travels to Monte Cristo and finds the great treasure. He returns to Marseilles where he is angered to learn that his father has died from the grief of his imprisonment, and that Mercédès has married Mondego, who, along with Danglars, has become very rich.

Ten years later, Dantès puts a well conceived plot of revenge in motion. Firstly, Mondego, now known as Morcef, is punished as Dantès discovers the fact that his former friend?s fortune is tainted, and he humiliates him publicly. Morcef?s wife and son leave him, and he commits suicide.
Dantès then gets his revenge on Villefort, by yet again exploiting his darkest secret. On the brink of facing criminal charges, he goes insane. Finally, Danglars? punishment consisted of him losing all of his money. Dantès will finally find happiness, and he falls in love with the lovely Haydée.
