The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe
(C. S. Lewis)
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is probably the best known and most beloved book in C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia. It was the first one written, and introduces us to the magical land of Narnia. There are giants, and satyrs, and fauns, and witches, and dwarfs, and a whole assortment of intelligent talking animals. The story focuses on four siblings, Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy, who are sent to stay with an old Professor for a summer in the country. While playing Hide and Seek, Lucy (the youngest) finds an old wardrobe, and goes inside to discover a whole world that is accessible through this wardrobe. She meets a nice faun, who tells her about this magical land of Narnia, and that it is eternally winter there because of an evil Witch who rules the land. After she leaves and tells her brothers and sister about it though, she is unable to get back again at that time. Naturally her siblings think she's making it up. Edmund is the next to stumble into this world, only he meets the evil witch herself. Rather than killing him, she slyly enlists his help so that she can get all four siblings together. When all of them come into this land, it sets into motion a prophecy that will overthrow this witch and end the everlasting winter. Through the cooperation of the siblings, and with the help of many magical creatures, the witch's rule is quite weakened. But nothing would be possible without the help of the great and powerful lion, Aslan. With his aid, and because of a tremendous sacrifice, the spell of the witch is broken. This book is considered by many to be a great classic. It was written for children, but the themes and parallels within the book are quite deep and applicable to people of all ages.
