Bob bought books for Maggie and helped the family. When Philip met Maggie again and Tom came to know about it he was angry with her. With reluctance he accepted her friendship with Philip. With Jakim?s help Tom made some money and bought Dorlcote mill back from Wakem. After Tom purchased the mill, Mr.Tulliver met Wakem and fought with him. He fell ill afterwards and soon died. Mrs.Tulliver was taken in by Lucy.Maggie, now a beautiful woman was teaching in another village. When she went to Lucy?s house in St.Ogg?s she met Stephen Guest, Lucy?s handsome, rich suitor. Lucy wanted Maggie and Philip to be alone. She sent Maggie where she met Stephen instead of Philip. They were lost and returned home the next morning. Maggie was treated as an outcast. Time went by and slowly everyone forgave her. When she was in Jakim?s house the River Floss started rising. Maggie borrowed a boat and rowed downriver to save Tom, her brother. While rowing back, the boat overturned and both of them of them were drowned.
