Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare's greatest literary masterpieces.This tragedytells the tale ofteenage soulmates, Romeo and Juliet, who are kept apart by families with a feud that has been going on for generations. They meet accidentally at a ball, and quickly fall in love. Because of their families' feud, they agree to marry secretly, and do so. But their love will be short-lived. Juliet's cousin, who had a previous run-in with Romeo, wants to fight him. Romeo will not accept the challenge, because he knows they are now related. But Mercutio, Romeo's friend, does fight Tybalt. Mercutio ends up dead, Romeo kills Tybalt, and Romeo is exiled by the prince for his crime. Juliet is distraught, and goes to the friar who performed the marriage ceremony. He helps her come up with a plan, which consists of her drinking a potion, which will put her into a death-like state for a few hours. According to the plan, when her parents discover she is dead, they will put her in the family crypt, and the friar will send a message to Romeo to come back. They will escape together and live happily ever after. But Romeo and Juliet isn't a fairy tale; it's a tragedy. Of course, the plan goes wrong. Romeo doesn't receive the message -- instead, he hears that Juliet is dead. In his sorrow, he buyspoison, goes back to see her one last time, andthen kills himself. His death comes just moments before Juliet awakens from her sleep. When she sees that her love is dead, she takes a dagger and stabs herself. What could have been a long love story ends there inquiet desperation.
