Ecclesiastes is a book written by a teacher, or at least that is what the name means. However, Ecclesiastes can hardly be defined as just a collection of teachings from a wise author. It is one of the most controversial books in the Bible. There is a roomer that it was questionable whether or not the book should be included into the Canon. But because of its weight and respect for it in the Jewish biblical tradition it was. After all, if this is the book full of teachings, which is what the other books in the Bible are full of, why all the noise around it? You see, surprisingly, Ecclesiastes is not just a collection of teachings. It is also a book of lament. And not just a lament about a specific terrible event or events in Israel, like the book of Lamentations. No, Ecclesiastes is a lament about life itself. In modern nomenclature we would say that the author, who is believed to be Solomon, was deeply depressed. Depressed? You mean someone who wrote a book in the Bible was depressed? Pretty much. You see the good thing about the Bible is that it is an honest, realistic book. It is a book that describes a perfect loving Almighty God. But our God is so loving that He is not going to torture us and publish a book about perfect people in the perfect world. After all He is the God of truth. And every one of us knows that the onlytruth about this world is imperfection, sin, mistakes, difficulties, and, yes, often even depression. So here you go. Solomon was truthful about not being happywith this world and living in it. So the Lord in His graciousness allowed him to write a pretty depressed book and put it in the Bible. However, there is also good news. You see, despite being depressed Ecclesiastes was also a very wise man. That is why containing the lament about life, the book also contains some of the most wise sayings and conclusions about life in the Bible. You see Proverbs contains sayings of wisdom about specific things or eventsin life. But Ecclesiastes brings to the table sayings of supreme wisdom about life in general; wisdom about life itself. That to me is quite amazing. Plus the sayings themselves are so amazing that they became some of the most known and popular biblical quotations even in the secular world.
